LOCAL SCHOOL HOLDS READ-A-THON, EARNS 108% OF PLEDGES IN FREE BOOKS!
Recently, the teachers and students of Reading Elementary School had the shopping spree of their lives when students there raised $6000.00 in pledges. How did they do it? By participating in an Usborne Books Read-a-Thon called "Reach for the Stars."
The Read-a-Thon, which was headed up by Usborne Supervisor Brandy Burge, earned the Reading school library $3000.00 in brand new Usborne Books.
But it didn’t stop there. Reading students still needed to be rewarded for their hard work, and were thrilled when they received half of their pledge money, a full $3000, to purchase Usborne Books to keep for their very own!
On top of that, another $480 books was donated to the Reading School Read-A-Thon by Usborne Books, making the school's total benefit 108% of pledges raised. Now that's a winning proposition!

What is an Usborne "Reach for the Stars" Read-a-Thon?
An Usborne “Reach for the Stars" Read-a-Thon is a sponsorship-based reading incentive program that puts thousands of dollars in FREE books into the hands of children and into your school classrooms and library. Students sign up sponsors who pledge money to encourage them to reach their reading goals. We want to see children reading or being read to for a minimum of 300 minutes over a two-week period.
The goals of this program are simple:
· to encourage students to motivate students to read;
· to promote reading as an activity to enjoy; and
· to help students make reading a habit by asking them to read for a sustained period of time every day.
Who can participate?
Any organized group of children can take part! I welcome...
-
Schools
-
Individual classrooms
-
School divisions
-
Homeschool Groups
- Preschools
- Daycares
- Church & Community Groups
How do the students benefit?
At the end of the Read-A-Thon, students receive half of the amount they raised individually to choose FREE Usborne books to keep for their own! With the help of a parent, each student makes a wish list of the Usborne books they would most like to have. The Usborne catalogue is available to view online for this purpose at www.usborne.ca/brandy. An Usborne catalogue will be made available at your school for students who are not able to access the online version.
EXAMPLE: A student who raises $100 will then be able choose $50 in free books to take home and keep.
How does the school/organization benefit?
Your school will use the remaining half of the total amount your students raised to purchase books for your library and classrooms. In addition, your school receives an extra 8% of total monies raised to purchase even more books! This extra money is donated by Usborne Books in Canada
EXAMPLE: If a child raises $100, the child gets to choose $50 in free books, and the school gets to choose $58 in free books.
Is this for real?
Yes, it is for real!. Your school’s Read-A-Thon will receive 108% of total monies raised. Your students get half, and your school receives the other half, PLUS you get an extra 8% of total pledges in free books.
What are the program options?
The students always receive half of total pledge dollars raised to buy books to keep. The school can allocate the other half of total monies in any way it chooses. No matter what, the school gets 108% of total pledges raised!

Is the Read-A-Thon a lot of work for the school?
No. Your Usborne Educational Specialist does the vast majority of the work to run your Read-A-Thon. I ask the school to promote the event, encourage the kids, and collect the READING LOGS, PLEDGE MONEY and WISH LISTS. I do the rest.
